Following Sunday’s split, the Mountain Hawks are 28-10 overall and 11-1 in league play – maintaining a five-game lead in the standings with eight league games still to play. Holy Cross is 7-22 overall, and 3-9 in the league.
The first game started in promising fashion for the visitors, as catcher Mary Wieder ripped a two-run homer to right – her sixth of the season. After the Crusaders tied the game with a pair of runs in the home half of the second, Lehigh re-took the lead with a run in the top of the third. Designated player Lauren Haney doubled home Kate Marvel to make the score 3-2 in favor of Lehigh.
However, Holy Cross tied the game in the fourth, and ultimately won it by scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Kate Arico came into the game in relief of junior Stefanie Forlenza, and ultimately suffered the tough-luck loss. Arico’s record falls to 7-5.
Wieder was 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener, and Marvel scored two runs.
The game one loss snapped Lehigh’s Patriot League regular season winning streak at a league-record 44 games.
However, the Mountain Hawks quickly put the disappointment of the game one setback behind them, and Lehigh rolled to a 4-1 win in game two.
Freshman pitcher Lisa Sweeney improved her record to 19-3 on the season with a complete game win. Sweeney scattered three hits and surrendered only one unearned run in the victory, as her earned run average dropped to 1.00 for the season. She struck out six Holy Cross batters.
With 19 wins, Sweeney needs only one more victory to tie Lehigh’s single season record, established by Emily Ling in 2005.
At the plate, Wieder doubled home pinch-runner Ali Linsk to get the offense going in the top of the fourth. In the fifth, LU added two more thanks to a Taryn Hanley sacrifice fly and an RBI hit from Marvel.
The Mountain Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI hit from Megan Conrad.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, when the Mountain Hawks visit Rider for a non-league doubleheader. Action gets underway at 3:00 pm from
