LU sweeps Holy Cross; improves to 10-0 in league

WORCESTER, Mass. – Lehigh reached the halfway point of the Patriot League season on Saturday, and the Mountain Hawks improved to a perfect 10-0 in league play with a sweep of Holy Cross at Freshman Field. Senior Mary Wieder went 3-for-3 to lead Lehigh to a 6-3 win in game one, then in the nightcap sophomore Kate Marvel delivered an RBI single to lead the Mountain Hawks to a 3-1 win in 11 innings. The wins improve Lehigh’s record to 27-9 overall, and the Brown and White have now won 44 straight regular season league games.
The Mountain Hawks raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening game, behind an RBI triple from Marvel and a double from Wieder in the third inning. Marvel drove in her second run of the game in the fourth, with a single that scored Megan Conrad. In the fifth inning, sophomore Taryn Hanley drove in Wieder with a single to left field.
Holy Cross scored a run in the fourth and two in the sixth, before Lehigh tacked on an additional insurance run on an RBI double from Hanley in the seventh. Hanley and Marvel each had two hits and two RBI, while juniors Heather Hamasaki and Julie Sterrett also had multi-hit games for Lehigh, who out-hit the Crusaders 12-3.
Freshman Lisa Sweeney went the distance in the circle, allowing three runs on three hits, allowing a walk and striking out 12 for her 17th win of the season.
Each team scored a run in the fourth inning of game two. Marvel led off the top of the inning with a double, and then came home on a single by Sterrett. The Crusaders tied the game in the bottom half on a fielder’s choice.
The game would remain tied into the eleventh inning as senior Kate Arico and then Sweeney matched zeroes with Marsha Babcock.
In the top of the eleventh, Marvel drove in Mendy Martin with the go-ahead run, with Whitney Schenbeck scoring an insurance run, as she came home on an error by second baseman Beth Richard. Marvel was 3-for-6 in game two with an RBI and a run scored.
In the circle, Arico went the first 6.1 innings, yielding just one run on six hits, while striking out six. Sweeney then followed with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and striking out four more Crusaders to improve to 18-3 on the season. Babcock went all 11 innings for Holy Cross and suffers the tough-luck loss.
Lehigh and Holy Cross will conclude their four game series with another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch for game one is set for noon from Freshman Field
