Sweeney , Wieder lead Lehigh to split at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Freshman Lisa Sweeney went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI at the plate, and struck out ten batters in the pitchers circle, as Lehigh rolled to a 9-0, six inning win over Marist in the second game of a doubleheader at Gartland Field. The Red Foxes snapped Lehigh’s nine game winning streak with a 4-0 win in game one. Lehigh now stands at 25-9 on the season, while Marist is 24-7 overall.
After Lehigh managed just four hits in game one, the Brown and White exploded for 11 in the nightcap. Sweeney got Lehigh on the board with an RBI single in the second inning, which scored junior Julie Sterrett to give Lehigh a 1-0 lead. The freshman righthander then continued to help herself at the plate with an RBI double in the fourth that scored sophomore Megan Conrad.
The Mountain Hawks exploded for five in the fifth inning, as Mary Wieder delivered an RBI single to score pinch runner Ali Torborg. Lehigh then plated four more runs on two Marist errors and a wild pitch. Wieder provided an exclamation point with a two-run double in the sixth inning to put Lehigh up by nine. Wieder finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Sweeney started the second game in the circle, and pitched five scoreless innings allowing just two hits and a walk while fanning ten Red Foxes earn her 16th win. Junior Stefanie Forlenza tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Lehigh as well.
In the day’s opening game senior Kate Arico worked out of several jams, but Marist put the only runs on the board on a pinch hit grand slam by Bridget Hurlman off of Sweeney with two outs in the fifth inning.
Junior Whitney Schenbeck had two of Lehigh’s four hits in a losing effort. Arico was saddled with the loss, and falls to 7-4 on the season.
Lehigh will return to action this weekend when the Mountain Hawks resume league play when they travel to Holy Cross. The Mountain Hawks and Crusaders will play doubleheaders both Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for Saturday’s twinbill is set for 1:00 pm from
