Mountain Hawks complete sweep of Bison

4/10/2006 12:00:00 AM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks improved to 8-0 in the Patriot League as they shut out Bucknell in both games of a doubleheader to earn a four game series sweep over the Bison. Lehigh took the opener 3-0 behind 12 strikeouts from freshman Lisa Sweeney, and then won the nightcap 1-0 in eight innings, with junior Lauren Haney netting the game winning RBI with a squeeze bunt. The Brown and White improve to 24-8 overall, and have now won 42 consecutive Patriot League regular season games.

Sophomore Kate Marvel served as the catalyst in game one, going 3-for-4 at the plate and driving in all three runs. In the bottom of the second, Marvel drove in junior Julie Sterrett and freshman Lisa Sweeney with a single. In the fourth, the Lehigh centerfielder tacked on another run, tripling home Sweeney to put Lehigh up 3-0.

In the pitcher’s circle, Sweeney was dominant, tossing a complete game five hitter, while striking out 12 to improve to 15-3 on the season. The shutout is her fifth of the season, and her 12 strikeouts tied her career high.

In game two, Lehigh senior Kate Arico and Bucknell’s Christie Wiest locked up in a classic pitcher’s duel, matching zeroes on the scoreboard for seven innings. The Bison threatened in the eighth, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Arico retired Lauren Litts on a ground ball to third base to end the threat.

In the bottom of the eighth, freshman Whitney Lowe laced a single to centerfield to lead off the inning. Lowe advanced to second on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third by Heather Hamasaki. The next batter, Haney dropped down a perfect bunt, and Lowe raced home, sliding around Litts’ tag attempt to give the Mountain Hawks the win and the doubleheader sweep.

Arico pitched all eight innings, allowing seven hits for her second shutout of the season. The Lehigh senior tri-captain also fanned eight batters as she improves to 7-3 on the season.

Both Sweeney and Arico are a perfect 4-0 in league games for the Brown and White.

Offensively, Haney totaled three hits in the two games, as did Sterrett, who has now hit in nine straight games for the Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh returns to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks travel to Marist for a non-league doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 3:30 pm from Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
