EASTON, Pa. – Lehigh opened up Patriot League play on Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader from rival Lafayette at Metzgar Field. The Mountain Hawks won game one 8-4 before rolling to a 7-1 win in the nightcap. The wins improve Lehigh’s record to 17-8 on the season, 2-0 in the Patriot League, while the Leopards fall to 8-15, 0-2 in league games. The Brown and White have now won 25 straight games over their rivals from Easton.

In game one the Mountain Hawks scored two runs in each of the first three innings to build a 6-0 lead. Junior Heather Hamasaki got Lehigh on the board in the top of the first inning, with a two-run home run to left center. In the second inning, sophomore Taryn Hanley delivered a two run single, scoring Lisa Sweeney and Whitney Lowe, and then in the third Megan Conrad delivered two more runs with an RBI single.

The Mountain Hawks tacked on two more in the eighth with a pair of unearned runs. In the pitching circle, Sweeney pitched six and two thirds innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits and striking out five to notch her 11th win of the season.

The Brown and White blew open the nightcap with four runs in the third inning, behind a sacrifice fly from Hanley, an RBI double from Hamasaki, and run scoring singles from Lauren Haney and Julie Sterrett. In the fifth, Sterrett scored on a Whitney Schenbeck sacrifice fly, and then in the seventh, the junior rightfielder iced the game with a two-run blast to centerfield, her second of the season.

Senior Kate Arico went the distance in the circle, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out ten to improve to 4-3 on the year.

Lehigh and Lafayette will wrap-up their four game series on Sunday with a doubleheader from Metzgar Field getting underway at noon.
