BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With the threat of inclement weather forcing Lehigh to pull out of the Highlander Mid-Spring Classic, the Mountain Hawks opened up their 2006 home schedule with a pair of wins on Friday at Kaufman Field. In game one junior Julie Sterrett scored on a wild pitch to give Lehigh a 4-3 win in eight innings over Iona, then in their second game the Mountain Hawks pounded out 11 hits in a 5-2 win over the University at Albany. Lehigh improves to 14-5 on the season with the wins.

Lehigh spotted the Gaels a 3-0 lead in game one, but tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Katherine Wegert drove in Lehigh’s first run with an RBI single that scored sophomore Megan Conrad. The Mountain Hawks then loaded the bases before junior Heather Hamasaki delivered a two-run single to tie the score.

The game went into extra innings, and with international tiebreaker rules in place, Sterrett started the bottom of the eighth on second base, was sacrificed to third and then scored on a wild pitch with Wegert at the plate with one out.

Senior Kate Arico started in the pitching circle, allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings, while striking out four. Freshman Lisa Sweeney pitched a scoreless eighth inning to secure her eighth win of the season.

Against Albany the Mountain Hawks scored first, as sophomore Megan Conrad singled to score senior Mary Wieder to put Lehigh up 1-0 in the second inning. The Great Danes put a run on the board in the bottom of the third, but Lehigh scored two in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good, as Wegert drew a bases loaded walk and Kate Marvel delivered an RBI single.

Wieder drove in two more for the Brown and White with a two-run home run to right centerfield, her fifth long ball of the season. The senior catcher was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and moved into second place on Lehigh’s career home run list with 12.

Sweeney went the distance in the circle to get her second win of the day and improve to 9-3 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks will take on Iona and Albany again on Saturday at Kaufman Field. Lehigh will face the Great Danes at 10:00 am and then will take on the Gaels at 2:00 pm with Iona meeting Albany at noon.
