Mountain Hawks split twinbill at Delaware

3/22/2006 12:00:00 AM | Softball

NEWARK, Del. – Lehigh split a doubleheader with Delaware on Wednesday winning the opener 4-2 before dropping the nightcap 1-0. The Mountain Hawks pounded out 10 hits in the game one win, but the bats went silent in game two as the Fightin’ Blue Hens’ Lindsay Jones tossed a no-hitter. The Mountain Hawks now stand at 12-5 with the split.

In game one, the Mountain Hawks fell behind 2-0 in the second, before tying the game in the fourth inning on a bases loaded two-run single by junior Lauren Haney. The game remained tied into the seventh inning, with Lehigh loading the bases again before senior Mary Wieder delivered a go-ahead two-run single to put the Mountain Hawks up for good. Freshman Lisa Sweeney went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on four hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Sweeney improves to 7-3 with the win.

Sophomore Kate Marvel led off game two with a walk, but it would turn out to be the only Mountain Hawk base runner of the game as Jones retired the next 20 batters. Kim Ovittore drove in the only run of the game with an RBI double in the first inning. Senior Kate Arico suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing just one run and three hits in four innings while striking out five Blue Hens as she falls to 3-2.

Lehigh will return to the diamond on Friday as the Mountain Hawks will open up play in the Highlander Mid-South Classic against Iona and Albany. Because of anticipated inclement weather in Radford, Virginia, Lehigh will host three games at Kaufman Field on Friday. The Mountain Hawks will face Iona at 11:00 am and Albany at 3:00 pm, with the Gaels and Great Danes facing off at 1:00 pm.
