Lehigh sweeps pair in Rebel Games finale

3/11/2006 12:30:00 AM | Softball

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Lehigh wrapped up play at the Rebel Spring Games on a high note, with wins against Butler and Monmouth on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks downed the Bulldogs 3-2 in the first game of the day before shutting out Monmouth 3-0 in the nightcap. Lehigh avenged a loss to the Hawks earlier in the week and the Brown and White improve to 7-3 on the season with the sweep.

Against Butler, Lehigh took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning as junior Julie Sterrett doubled home pinch-runner Ali Torborg and then several batters later scored on an error. The Bulldogs tied the game with two runs in the fourth, but it was Sterrett putting Lehigh ahead with an RBI single in the sixth.

The Mountain Hawks got out of several jams defensively, to help junior Stefanie Forlenza earn her second win. Forlenza tossed six and one-third innings, allowing two runs and eight hits while striking out four. Senior Kate Arico came into the game in the bottom of the seventh, and induced a double play ground ball to end the game.

Sterrett went 3-for-3 against Butler, while junior Lauren Haney also delivered a pair of hits.

Lehigh jumped on Monmouth early, scoring all three runs in the first two innings. The Mountain Hawks plated two in the first, as Kate Marvel stole third and scored on an error as part of a double-steal with Heather Hamasaki, Sterrett delivered her third RBI hit of the day to score Hamasaki. The Brown and White tacked on a third run in the second inning as Whitney Lowe scored on a fielder’s choice by Taryn Hanley.

The three runs were plenty for Arico, who hurled a complete game six-hit shutout, with two strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Sterrett, Lowe and Hamasaki all picked up two hits apiece versus Monmouth.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the diamond next Friday, when they travel to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to defend their title at the Bash at the Beach, hosted by Delaware State. Lehigh will take on Rutgers, Friday at 9:00 am and then will meet Stony Brook at 3:00 pm.
