No. 21 Lehigh extends record breaking streak

10/11/2006 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Playing a man down for most of the second half could not stop the No.21 Mountain Hawks as they defeated the Adelphi Panthers 2-0 on a rainy Wednesday afternoon.  With a goal in each half, Lehigh extended its streak without a loss to ten games, a new program record, as well as recorded its ninth shutout of the season.  The Mountain Hawks, now 10-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League, are also closing in on their single-season shutout record, which was set in 2004 with 11 shutouts.

“With the rainy conditions, I thought the guys did a nice job in today’s game at building a lead and then protecting it,” said head coach Dean Koski.  “Certainly the streak is a nice accomplishment, but what really matters is what is ahead of us.  We have just focused on one game at a time this season, making each one just as important as the next.  Our next important match is this weekend against Bucknell.”

Sophomore Jim Taranto earned his sixth score of the season in the 15th minute when he scored Lehigh’s first goal.  With the Adelphi goalkeeper Michael Hurley challenging him, Taranto got around Hurley and shot into the open net.  With the goal, Taranto becomes the sole scoring leader for the Mountain Hawks.

Freshman Kyle Evans received his second yellow card of the match in the 49th minute for playing the ball after the whistle, leaving Lehigh with a man down for the remainder of the match.  Evans received his first card in the 30th minute for the same infraction.

The Mountain Hawks sealed the win in the 83rd minute with an unassisted goal by junior Robert Quinlan.  For his first goal of the season, Quinlan took a shot from 30 yards out that skimmed the grass and went over Hurley’s shoulder.

Jim Morahan earned his eighth shutout of the season, recording two saves in the game.  Lehigh out shot the Panthers 11-7 and also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

No. 21 Lehigh returns to the Ulrich Sports Complex on Saturday night when the Mountain Hawks welcome the Bucknell Bison.  Game time is set for 7:00 pm.  Live video and audio will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports.
