Mountain Hawks sweep pair from Saint Joseph's

East Norriton, PA – After winning its second straight Patriot League Tournament championship last week, Lehigh tuned up for its upcoming NCAA Regional appearance by sweeping a pair of optional practice games against Saint Joseph’s, 3-1 and 5-4, Monday afternoon. The victories give Lehigh a six game winning streak heading into regionals and at 41-8 the Mountain Hawks have set a new school and Patriot League record for wins in a season.

In game one, the Mountain Hawks fell behind 1-0 after one inning, but in the top of the second, the Brown and White took the lead for good as Mendy Martin drilled a three run homer to left center. Whitney Schenbeck and Lauren Haney also scored on Martin’s longball and that was all the runs starter Emily Ling would need. Ling went the distance allowing just the one run on six base hits and no walks, while fanning ten, as she improves to 20-5 on the season.

The Mountain Hawks had to play catch-up in the night cap as well. Lehigh went up 1-0 in the first as Taryn Hanley came home on a Mary Wieder RBI single. In the fourth Julie Sterrett drilled an RBI double that scored Haney. In the fifth, Saint Joseph’s roared back with four runs off of Lehigh starter Heather Hamasaki, but the Mountain Hawks would respond once again in the top of the sixth. Sterrett brought Lehigh within one after driving home Jess Young with a single. Then it was Martin again, delivering a two-run single to give Lehigh the lead, making Hamasaki a winner for the eighth time this season. Kate Arico retired all six batters she faced to record the save.

Lehigh will find out its NCAA fate on Sunday evening when the regional groupings are announced live on ESPNEWS at 7:30 pm. Regional action will get underway on Friday, May 20 at a time and place to be determined.
