Mountain Hawks open league play with DH sweep of Bison

3/26/2005 12:00:00 AM | Softball

Lewisburg, PA – The Lehigh softball team continued to roll, as the Mountain Hawks began Patriot League play with a doubleheader sweep at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.  Lehigh took the opener by a 5-0 score, and then pounded the Bison by a 9-2 count in game two of the twinbill.  The victories push the Mountain Hawks’ winning streak to eleven straight, while improving the team’s record to 16-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.  The Bison are now 4-7 overall and 0-2 in Patriot League play.

In the opener, Lehigh put a two-spot on the board in the top of the first.  After center fielder Kate Marvel led off the game with an infield hit, third baseman Kelly Kliewer plated Marvel with an RBI single to make the score 1-0.  Later in the frame, right fielder Julie Sterrett laced a single plating second baseman Jessica Young with the game’s second run.

In the second, the Mountain Hawks scored twice more as Kliewer smacked a double to left-center to make the score 4-0 in favor of the visitors.

The early offense proved to be more than adequate for the Lehigh hurlers, as Emily Ling (five innings) and Stefanie Forlenza (two) combined to blank the home team.  Each Lehigh pitcher allowed only one base hit in the game, and Ling struck out five in running her record to 8-2 on the season.

Kliewer was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Mountain Hawks in the win.  Shortstop Mendy Martin was also 3-for-4, ripping two doubles en route to the victory.

In game two, the offense picked up right where it left off in the opener, scoring a pair in the top of the first.  Leading 2-1 in the second, first baseman Taryn Hanley ripped a two-run triple to right field to make the score 4-1.  The Mountain Hawks blew the game open with three more runs in the top of the fifth.

As a team, the Mountain Hawks took advantage of five Bison errors in the game two win.  Martin added two more hits while driving in a pair of runs in the nightcap.

Kate Arico went the distance in the pitcher’s circle in the second game, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs in pushing her record to 3-1 on the season.

Lehigh’s current 11-game winning streak is the longest since the team won 12 straight in 2003.

The Mountain Hawks and Bison resume their series with another doubleheader on Sunday.  In an attempt to beat impending inclement weather, first pitch of game one will come at 10:00 am from West Fields in Lewisburg.
