HACKENSACK, N.J. – Lehigh stepped away from Patriot League play Wednesday night and put a stop to its eight match losing skid, as the Mountain Hawks swept Fairleigh Dickinson 3-0 in a non-league match at Rothman Center. The Brown and White needed a little overtime in the first two games and was able to prevail, then built and held on to a comfortable lead in the third game. The win improves Lehigh’s record to 4-14 on the season, while the Knights fall to 10-13 with the loss.

Game one started as a back and forth affair, with neither team building a substantial lead. The Mountain Hawks opened a five point lead midway through the first game, but FDU battled back. The game went down to the wire, but in the end Lehigh was able to squeak out a 31-29 win.

The Mountain Hawks jumped out to an early lead in game two, which saw Lehigh build leads, only to see Fairleigh Dickinson cut into them. Lehigh lead 20-15 before the Knights came back and eventually took the lead with game point at 29-27. The Mountain Hawks kept their composure, were able to tie the game and after both teams crossed the 30-point threshold but Lehigh won the key points in the end and took the game 33-31

Things were comparatively easier for Lehigh in game three. The Mountain Hawks raced to a 6-1 lead and never looked back en route to a 30-22 victory, sweeping the match and giving Lehigh its first win since a 3-1 win over Morgan State on September 10.

“This was a total team effort, everyone played well,” said head coach Amanda Moran. “This is probably the best we’ve played all year because we played together and worked together and everybody played a strong match.

Michelle Schwendenmann returned from a one-game absence to lead Lehigh with 21 kills, while hitting .471 for the match. Morgan Volkart added nine kills and four block assists, while Julia Atkins had six kills and five block assists.  The Mountain Hawks hit .248 for the match. Elizabeth McGehee led the team with 31 assists while Tory Marion chipped in with 11. Defensively Cassidy Maumus tallied 16 digs and Nikky Barnes added eight.

Megan Philbrick led the Knights with eight kills. FDU had a .130 hitting percentage on the evening.

The Mountain Hawks return to the court on Friday night when they welcome their arch rivals Lafayette to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The match gets underway at 7:00 and will be broadcast online at lehighsports.com with streaming audio and video provided by Yahoo! Sports.
