Lehigh drops its home opener to Lock Haven

9/1/2004 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh fell in its home opener on Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex by a score of 2-1 to Lock Haven.  With the loss Lehigh falls to 0-2 on the young season, while the Lady Eagles improve to 2-0.

Both teams struggled with their offenses in the first half, but part of that was the great defense played by each team.  Lehigh was only able to muster one shot in the first 35 minutes, while Lock Haven only got off three.  With both defenses applying suffocating pressure, the two sides retired at the half with a pair of zeroes on the scoreboard.

The second half started much like the first, with little offense, and much defense.  However, Lock Haven was finally able to break the scoreless streak when Courtney Hughes scored off of a corner from Sarah Huber and the Lady Eagles were in front at the 51:57 mark.  Just under four minutes later, Lock Haven struck again, this time as Renee Kemmerer found the back of the net to put the visitors in front 2-0.

Lehigh would not back down however, as Kelsey Smith scored her second collegiate goal off of a feed from senior Sheila Clabby and the Mountain Hawks were within one at the 66 minute mark.  Unfortunately, Lehigh would run out of time and fell by a 2-1 count.  Lehigh was outshot by the Lady Eagles 12-4 on the evening, and also had fewer corners (1) than its opponent (4).

In goal for Lehigh senior Jeanine Hoff sent back nine Lady Eagle shots, while Lock Haven goalie Melissa Stubblefield rejected two Mountain Hawk shots.

“I think we made some nice adjustments from Saturday (versus Temple),” explained second year head coach Julie Mazer.  “We just need to possess the ball better and finish when we have opportunities.  We’ll continue to work and learn with each passing game.”

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Ithaca, New York to take on Cornell.  That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00.
