Lehigh opened the scoring just :54 seconds into the contest when Kelsey Smith scored her second goal in as many games off of a feed from Maureen Harrington to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. Cornell came right back however, as Danielle Dunn netted a goal of her own at the 2:44 mark and the game was tied at one. Gina Testa struck next for the Big Red as she found the back of the net at the 14:22 clip and the home team was in front 2-1.
Lindsay Moyer then put the Big Red in front by two goals as she took a pass from Dunn and re-directed it into the cage. Lehigh would not give up as senior Sheila Clabby scored her first goal of the season off of a feed from fellow senior Dana Griffin. The score sat at 3-2 at that point and would remain that way as the two teams headed in for halftime.
Cornell then opened the second stanza quickly with a goal just 21 seconds into the half to pull in front 4-2. Freshman Katie Noon pulled the Mountain Hawks back to within one goal at the 50:14 mark when she slipped her first collegiate goal ever past the Cornell goalie and Lehigh had new life. But Sara Weiner scored her second goal of the half and Moyer added her second tally to give the Big Red the 6-3 advantage and eventually the victory.
In goal for Lehigh, senior Jeanine Hoff stopped four shots on the day while junior Meghan Gove stopped one Cornell shot. Cornell goalie Lori Blutinger stopped 16 Mountain Hawk shots. Lehigh had 14 penalty corners and the Big Red had six.
“We didn’t give up today, we kept coming at them over and over. We just unfortunately could not get enough goals to stay with them on the offensive end,” explained head coach Julie Mazer.
