Princeton delivers with two outs to sweep Lehigh

Allentown, PA – Lehigh and Princeton faced off on Wednesday in a battle of top contenders for league titles.  On this day, Princeton came away with two victories to help build their confidence, as they squeezed out a couple of very hard fought affairs, 5-1 and 2-1.  Both squads came in with highly touted pitching staffs, and neither team disappointed as both had difficulty scoring runs.

In the first game, Princeton broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth with three runs, two of them coming on a two-run homer by Tigers star Melissa Finley. Princeton would add a run in the sixth to make it 5-1, but the insurance was unnecessary, as starter Erin Snyder and reliever Amelia Runyan held the Mountain Hawks to just one run on two hits.

Emily Ling was solid, even though she gave up four runs on five hits in five innings. The only real mistake was the homer by Finley, as all the other hits were either bloopers or balls that reached the outfield just past the reach of the Lehigh infielders. Lauren Haney drove in Lehigh’s only run when she plated Whitney Schenbeck in the bottom of the fourth.

The second game was even closer.  Scoreless into the third, Princeton took a 1-0 lead as Wendy Bingham singled to score Amanda Erickson, who had led off the inning with a double.

With the score still 1-0 into the bottom of the seventh, the Mountain Hawks came through in the clutch to tie the score.  Erin Hengemuhle led off the inning with a double, then scored when second baseman Lindsey Motal failed to field a ground ball by Mendy Martin cleanly.  Lehigh would get two on with none out, but pitcher Callin Varner would retire the side from there to send the game to extras.

In the ninth, Kristen Del Calvo hit a ground rule double to left to score Bingham, and Lehigh would fail to score in the bottom of the inning to finally end the game.

With the loss, Lehigh falls to 25-11-2 on the year, while Princeton improves to 15-10.  The Tigers were outstanding in the clutch, scoring all six of their runs on the day after there were already two outs in the inning.

Lehigh returns to Patriot League action this weekend, as Bucknell comes to town for a four game series.  The first game of the Saturday doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00pm.
