Lehigh's pitching good, Rider's better in Wednesday DH

4/21/2004 12:00:00 AM | Softball

Lawrenceville, NJ – Lehigh has relied on its pitching staff all season long to lead them to victories.  On Wednesday, they came up against a staff for Rider that has done the same, and the Broncs came out on top, sweeping the Mountain Hawks in a doubleheader by finals of 1-0 and 3-1.

Heather Hamasaki, who has been the victim a few times this season already of poor run support, came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 score again in the first game.  Hamasaki and Rider hurler Heather Beintema matched each other through seven innings, each shutting out the opposition.

In the bottom of the eighth though, the Broncs finally got to Hamasaki, as Anna Jasicki scored from third base on a single by Amanda Tu to win the game.  Beintema (12-3) collected her seventh shutout of the season, while Hamasaki fell to 8-8 despite giving up just one run on four hits in 7.1 innings while striking out eight.

Lehigh could only muster four hits in the game, with two of them coming in the second inning on consecutive singles by Mary Wieder and Erin Hengemuhle. But Wieder was thrown out at the plate on an attempted double steal, and Rider got out of the inning unscathed.

In the second game, Rider plated a run in each of the first two innings against Lehigh starter Kate Arico (12-2), doubling three times in the frames.  Rider’s Devin Karcesky made it stand, as again the Mountain Hawks could not muster much offense, scoring their only run in the fourth when Liz Gripp scored on an RBI single by Kelly Kliewer.

Julie Sterrett was 2-3 in the game, the only Mountain Hawk with a multi-hit game on the afternoon.

Lehigh will be back in action this weekend as they try to wrap up their sixth straight Patriot League title against visiting Colgate.  The Mountain Hawks magic number is 2 to clinch going into their last league series of the season.

The first game on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 2:00, with audio coverage being provided on Lehigh’s website at www.lehighsports.com.
