Bethlehem, PA – The Mountain Hawks pitching staff continued to roll on Saturday, as Emily Ling and Kate Arico pitched a pair of gems leading Lehigh to a four game sweep of the visiting Bucknell Bison. Lehigh’s offense was efficient, scoring enough runs to get the job done as they won the two games on Saturday 3-1 and 4-0.
In the first game, Emily Ling (12-3) backed up her complete game victory from Friday with another stellar performance and a near shutout. Ling held the Bison scoreless through six innings, but Bison catcher Angie Stackhouse hit the first home run of the season at Kaufman Field with a solo shot in the top of the seventh. Ling gave up just three hits, and matched her season high with 13 strikeouts.
Lehigh got all their runs in the third inning, with Jessica Young driving in a pair with a single before scoring herself on Erin Hengemuhle’s RBI single.
In the second game, Kate Arico was just as dominant, giving up only a single to Stackhouse in the fourth for a one-hit shutout. Arico struck out three, and faced just one batter over the minimum as she induced one groundball out after another from Bucknell’s hitters.
Much like in the opener, the Mountain Hawks got their runs early, scoring three in the bottom half of the first and adding a fourth in the third. Lauren Haney and Liz Gripp each drove in two runs, and each had a pair of hits in the game. Shana Treon was 3-3 in the game as well and had four hits overall on the afternoon.
After the games, head coach Fran Troyan praised the work of his pitching staff. “They were great all series long,” said Troyan. “We came this close to getting two shutouts today, and I thought the team played outstanding defense in support of the pitching staff. Anytime you can get four wins in a series, you are going to be happy, and it becomes much easier when the pitchers perform the way they did this weekend.”
The Mountain Hawks will hit the road for the next couple weeks, beginning with a doubleheader on Wednesday April 13 at Villanova. The first game is set to begin at
