Late homer keeps Lehigh from Tuesday sweep

Kissimmee, FL – The Mountain Hawks continue to be a part of late-game theatrics in the early going this season, but on Tuesday unfortunately came out on the wrong side.  After beating IPFW 2-1 earlier in the day, Lehigh was within one out of beating Eastern Kentucky before the Colonels got a two-run home run to win the game 4-3.  Lehigh lost for only the third time this season, as their record goes to 11-3-1.

In the first game, Kate Arico (5-0) was once again a dominant force on the mound.  Coming off a no-hitter on Monday, Arico pitched another complete game against IPFW, allowing one run on five hits and striking out 5. The Mountain Hawks pushed across two runs in the third on a pair of RBI singles by Liz Gripp and Julie Sterrett, and Arico made the tallies stand.  Arico now has a 0.72 ERA in five starts this season.

In the second game, Emily Ling was cruising towards a one-hitter as Lehigh took a 3-0 lead into the top of the seventh.  But EKU rallied, getting four runs in the inning on four hits and an error. Heather Hamasaki (2-2) got credit for the loss, as she relieved Ling and gave up the game-winning HR to Alysha Jones. Shelby Thompson pitched four and two-thirds innings in relief to get the win for Eastern Kentucky.

Mary Wieder was 2-3 with a run and an RBI in the loss.

Head coach Fran Troyan talked about his pitching staff after the games. “Kate Arico is pitching so well right now,” said Troyan. “She really gives us a chance to win every game, even if we aren’t scoring many runs. And Emily (Ling) had a one-hitter into the seventh, but unfortunately we allowed them to get the better of us then and couldn’t come back.”

Lehigh is off on Wednesday, but continues its Spring Break trip on Thursday with two games, a 12:30 match with Butler and a 2:15 game with Yale.
