Men gain revenge against Bison, women fall

2/7/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving

The Mountain Hawks had a bittersweet victory over the Bucknell Bison this Saturday, in what was their last dual home meet of the season. With the women losing 196 to 104, and the men triumphing with a final score of 157 to 143, it was an overall impressive performance against what is one of their toughest competitors.

Despite the ultimate loss, the women swam exceptionally well against the former league champion Bison. Freshman Betsy Balaguer and Junior Kristin Pawlowski both beat their personal best times, in the 200-meter freestyle and the 100 meter backstroke, respectively. Sophomore Linda Hendrickson also shone as the winner of the 200-meter fly, beating out the competition with a time of 2:10:17.

Lehigh head coach John Morrison had nothing but praise for the women, noting that, “The women swam well and raced very hard against a team as great as Bucknell. It was just a really great effort on the women’s part.”

On the men’s side, it was a very close and exciting match, with Lehigh winning with 9 out of the 16 events. Ross Green clinched it for the Hawks by tanking the competition in the 200-meter fly. This was just the icing on Green’s outstanding day, as he also broke the pool record for the 100-meter fly earlier in the day.

The dynamic men’s relay team of Tom Gilbert, Grant Flothmeier, Ross Green, and Matt Titko also broke the pool record for the 200-meter medley. The men surpassed the Bison with an impressive time of 1:35.41.

“Overall, both the men and women swam well today,” concluded Coach Morrison. “Everyone swam really hard for the seniors, trying to make this last home meet of theirs special. They swam exceptionally strong for a time so late in the season, when they are in rest mode. They really gave it their all today.”

The Mountain Hawks will rest for until the end of February, when they will head to the Patriot League Championships on Feb. 27-28.
