Lehigh wraps up perfect Saturday with win at Harvard

1/31/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

Cambridge, MA – Lehigh got outstanding performances from its top wrestlers twice on Saturday afternoon to take down two more EIWA opponents.  Brad Dillon and Troy Letters each won twice, as they respectively passed and tied the all-time mark at Lehigh for consecutive dual wins.  The previous mark of 35 straight was held by Kirk Pendleton, ’63, and stood for 41 years before Dillon broke it with his 36th straight Saturday night against Harvard.  Letters won his 35th straight right beforehand via forfeit, and Lehigh defeated Harvard 38-8 after taking down Brown 25-9 earlier in the afternoon in Providence.

Harvard came out strong, winning the first two weight classes, including top-ranked Jesse Jantzen taking down Matt Anderson by a 10-1 major decision.  At 157, Brandon Kaufmann followed with a major decision of his own, 12-2 over Ben Bishop.

Lehigh would take over from there, as Troy Letters accepted a forfeit at 165.  Then, at 174, Dillon took the record in impressive fashion, pinning Eddie Jones at 5:46 of the third period. Travis Frick then won his fourth straight dual match, this time besting PJ Jones by a 12-4 major decision.

At 197 Matt Cassidy followed that with a thrilling double-overtime victory via riding time over Reggie Lee.  Paul Weibel then took an injury forfeit win over Jonas Corl at heavyweight when Corl hurt his knee early in the first period.

At 125, Mario Stuart dominated from the start, defeating Brent Kakesako by major decision 15-4.  Matt Ciasulli then showed his skills, pinning Greg Cook in just 1:01.  Finally, Cory Cooperman finished the night with a 6-1 victory over Max Meltzer at 141.

Earlier in the afternoon, Brad Dillon tied the long standing Lehigh record as the Mountain Hawks won their fourth straight dual Saturday afternoon, defeating the Brown Bears 25-9. Lehigh, now 16-3 and 5-0 in the EIWA, has won thirteen straight against league opponents. The Mountain Hawks spotted Brown the first two weight classes, but then won the next seven bouts to put the dual out of reach.

The match started at 149, and Brown got off to a very good start, as David Dies defeated Matt Anderson 6-5 and Michael Savino bested Ben Bishop 8-5 at 157 to give stake Brown to a 6-0 lead.  However, top-ranked Troy Letters erased that in a hurry, pinning his opponent Sean Jenkins in just 1:13 to tie it up at 6-6.

Dillon was next, and he dominated from the start, taking a major decision 18-7 over Adam Santee.  Dillon has now won 35 straight dual matches, which ties Kirk Pendleton, ’63, for the all-time record at Lehigh.  Letters, with 34 straight, is also on the verge of passing the mark.

At 184, Travis Frick, never at a loss for dramatic finishes, defeated Nick Ciarcia by a margin of less than a second of riding time, after neither wrestler could score a victory through two overtime periods.  At 197, Matt Cassidy then picked up a close fought win, getting two takedowns in the third period to win 6-3 over Peter Mosely. In another down-to-the-wire finish, Paul Weibel used over two minutes of riding time to take an extra point and defeat Lee Beane at heavyweight 9-8.

Returning to the lightweights, Mario Stuart picked up the win over Greg Pace 4-1 at 125, and then Matt Ciasulli overcame a late rally by Dan Appello to win 9-4 at 133.

Brown got its only other victory on the afternoon when Mike Ashton defeated Matt Ennis 5-2.  Ennis was making his Mountain Hawk dual debut subbing for Cory Cooperman at 141.

Lehigh returns home for its last three home duals of the season next Friday and Saturday.  The Mountain Hawks will wrestle Hofstra at 7:00 on Friday night, and then will take on Virginia and North Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 and 3:00.  Radio coverage of all three duals will begin 15 minutes before the matches on 1260/1130 WEEX and on Lehigh’s website at www.lehighsports.com.
