Lehigh finishes sweep of academies with victory over Navy

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh continued its recent dominance over the nation’s service academies, sweeping them for the eighth straight year as they defeated Navy 29-9 Saturday afternoon in front of a raucous crowd of 1,928 at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks took victories in eight of ten weight classes on the way to improving their record to 14-3 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the EIWA.
The match started at 149, as Matt Anderson defeated John Cox to give the Lehigh an early 3-0 cushion. At 157, Navy took a surprising lead, as Michael Carbonaro pinned Mark McCauley at
The Mountain Hawks would jump back in it at that point, with Troy Letters and Brad Dillon each taking victories at 165 and 174. Both Letters and Dillon remained undefeated on the year, and with 32 and 33 straight dual victories respectively they are both bearing down on Kirk Pendleton’s all-time record of 35 straight at Lehigh.
Travis Frick got back on track at 184 with a major decision, a 15-5 victory over Travis Manion. Then Matt Cassidy shrugged off what appeared to be an apparent injury late in the third period with a takedown and three-point near fall to beat Thayer Paxton 13-6 at 197.
Navy got their only other victory on the afternoon at heavyweight when Tanner Garrett defeated Paul Weibel 7-3.
Returning to the lightweights, Mario Stuart and Matt Ciasulli picked up wins at 125 and 133 before Cory Cooperman finished the match in style, pinning Nate Gulosh at
