Ithaca, NY – The Mountain Hawks saw another dual come down to the very end, and Cornell proved to be a very tough opponent Sunday afternoon, but in the end the Mountain Hawks came away with a tie break victory in a 16-16 match. Troy Letters had a two-point near fall in his bout at 165, and those points were the deciding factor as Lehigh moves to 15-3, 4-0 on the season.
The teams traded victories back and forth all afternoon, starting at 125 with Mario Stuart the winner over Mike Mormile. Top-ranked Travis Lee then defeated Matt Ciasulli at 133 8-3. At 141 Cory Cooperman put Lehigh back on top with a 6-1 decision over Keith Dickey, before No. 5 Dustin Minotti eeked out a 5-4 win against Matt Anderson.
At 157, Scott Roth got a bonus win for Cornell with a 12-4 win over Mark McCauley, but when Troy Letters did the same at 165 it was knotted back at 10-10. The near-fall by Letters would prove to be the deciding factor.
At 174, Brad Dillon had one of his closest victories of the season, 3-2 over Tyler Baier, followed by a resurgent Travis Frick at 184 with a 4-2 win of his own.
Cornell would win the last two weight classes to tie it at 16, and after much discussion of tie-breaks, the Mountain Hawks were declared the victors.
Lehigh will return to the mat next Saturday when they travel to Brown and Harvard. The Brown match is set for
