Weibel's W sends Mountain Hawks into the finals

1/10/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

Hampton, VA – After laying waste to the competition in the first two rounds of the Virginia Duals on Friday, the Mountains Hawks faced much stiffer competition in the semifinals Saturday against No. 19 Wisconsin.  Just like in Tuesday’s loss to Penn State, the match with the Badgers came down to the final bout.  However, this time the Mountain Hawks were able to come through, as Paul Weibel won his match at heavyweight to give Lehigh the 20-15 victory to advance to the finals.

The match started out shaky for a Mountain Hawks team which had won nineteen of twenty bouts so far at the Duals.  At 125, Tom Clum defeated Mario Stuart 8-3 to put the Mountain Hawks behind for the second dual in a row. Unlike against The Citadel though, Lehigh would not take off from there, as Ed Gutnik defeated Matt Ciasulli 4-0 at 133.  Each of the three bouts Ciasulli has wrestled in the Duals has ended in shutout so far – two in his favor and one against.

At 141, Cory Cooperman swung the momentum back towards Lehigh with a 16-4 major decision over Tony Turner.  Following that at 149, Matt Anderson picked up his third bonus win of the Duals with a pin of Tyler Laudon at 5:52 of the third period, putting the Mountain Hawks back in the lead at 10-6.

In the closest match of the dual, Tyler Turner defeated Derek Zinck at 157 in the third overtime period by a 5-4 final.  Zinck released Turner to go for the takedown, but could not execute it before the time ran out and Turner took the one point victory. At 165, top-ranked Troy Letters dominated Kelly Flaharty, winning by major decision 12-2.  Getting more than he bargained for, No. 2 Brad Dillon won his closest match on the season so far, narrowly defeating Ralph DeNisco 3-2 at 174.

In another overtime match, Wisconsin’s Ryan Flaharty bested Travis Frick with a sudden victory, 7-5 at 184. Then, with Brady Reinke’s 9-8 victory over Matt Cassidy at 197, Wisconsin cut the deficit to 17-15 with just one weight class left.

Paul Weibel came through when his team needed him though, defeated Jareck Horton 9-6 to preserve the five-point victory for the Mountain Hawks.

In the finals, a matchup of top ten teams will feature No. 3 Lehigh taking on No. 6 Nebraska in a rematch of last year’s title contest, a match the Mountain Hawks won easily 34-7.  Saturday night’s match figures to be much closer, as the Cornhuskers come in with confidence after demolishing No. 10 Arizona State 37 - -1 in the semifinals.  Nebraska won all ten bouts, and ASU lost points for unsportsmanlike conduct to finish with the negative score.

The finals are set for 8:30 p.m. Saturday night.
