Bill Binder is considered by many to be Lehigh's first basketball star. Although his career was shortened by his military service in World War II, Binder certainly established himself as one of Lehigh’s all-time greats. Binder set school, season and career scoring records by averaging 16.7 points per game.
Binder became the second Lehigh alumnus to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame following race car and track owner Roger Penske. Captain of the 1942 and 1943 squads, Binder began playing basketball at Lehigh in 1939.
He was a preseason All-America pick by several major Eastern newspapers prior to his senior season before entering the Army. After the war, he joined the Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern Pro League, first as a player then as a coach from 1947-1949.
Binder was active after graduating from Lehigh as a member of the Lions and Rotary Clubs. Binder also coached Little League baseball and junior basketball programs. He also served as district manager for Moore Business Forms.
“I feel I’m representing all of my teammates and coaches in accepting this award,” Binder said. “My four years at Lehigh were the best of my life. It gave me a great education and a great social setting. I learned from everyone I came into contact with. I'll always remember playing the first game in Grace Hall after playing so many years in Taylor Gym.”
