Stephanie Covelle enters her 17th season as the pitching coach for the Lehigh softball team. The former Stephanie Howell, a 2002 Lehigh graduate, competed on Lehigh’s 2001 team which won a Patriot League title, and went on to qualify for the NCAA regional tournament in Oklahoma. That same year, Howell earned All-Region honors as well as the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year award. In her senior year, she was honored with the Lehigh Softball Coaches Award for her contributions to the team in terms of attitude, improvement and leadership. Also, Howell attained the ECAC Merit Scholar distinction. She went on to earn her Masters degree in Education, Secondary School Counseling from Lehigh in 2004.
In her tenure, Covelle has coached six Mountain Hawks: Emily Ling ’05, Lisa Sweeney ’09, Tiffany Curtis ’10, Becca Bliss ‘13, Emily Bausher ’15 and Christine Campbell ‘17 to Patriot League Pitcher of the Year honors. Sweeney became the first pitcher in league history to win four Pitcher of the Year awards, and graduated as both Lehigh’s and the Patriot League’s career leader in wins and strikeouts.
Last year, Covelle worked with four pitchers who made significant contributions. Parker Boyd led Lehigh in wins and ERA for the second straight season, while freshman Gabriella Nori emerged in the second half of the season and was Lehigh’s top pitcher during Patriot League play. Boyd earned second team All-Patriot League honors as a sophomore in 2018. In 2020 Covelle will work with a Lehigh pitching staff that includes Boyd, Nori, junior Lainey Stephenson and freshman Tori Fletcher.
At practice, Covelle coordinates and executes all workouts for pitchers and catchers. In games, she is responsible for the calling and charting of pitches. She also assists in both on and off-campus recruiting.
Covelle and her husband Mark, a former administrative assistant for Lehigh softball, reside in Bethlehem.
