Lehigh Tops Stony Brook 5-2 in Florida Finale

MIAMI – A four-run sixth inning propelled Lehigh to a 5-2 win over Stony Brook Sunday in the Mountain Hawks' final game at FIU's Felsberg Invitational. The Mountain Hawks turned three Seawolves errors into two runs and then sophomore Kelly Fricker delivered a two-run single to give Lehigh a 5-1 lead.

Stony Brook scored a run in the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs before Lehigh was able to secure the final out and its second win over Stony Brook this weekend.

Fricker and first-year Megan Lodge both had two hits for the Mountain Hawks, who head home from their opening weekend at 3-2.

Lehigh opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when sophomore Helen Woloshyn singled home junior Holly Lovett.

Senior Chloe Hess held Stony Brook without a hit through 4.2 innings, before a single, a wild pitch and a Malorie Hill RBI single tied the game at 1-1.

Stony Brook put two on with one out in the sixth but Hess got Rachael Brown to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Lodge led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, stole second, and after two Stony Brook errors, came home with the go-ahead run. First-year Maia D'Amico, pinch running for Lovett, scored Lehigh's third run when Woloshyn reached on an error. Fricker followed with a two-run single to put Lehigh ahead 5-1 after six.

In the seventh, Hess recorded two quick outs, but Stony Brook put together four consecutive singles, to cut Lehigh's lead to 5-2 with the bases loaded. Lehigh brought first-year Maddie Masiko on in relief and she retired Marissa Thalassinos on a popup back to the circle to end the game.

Hess allowed two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Lehigh finished with eight hits against Stony Brook pitching.

The Mountain Hawks will be back in action next weekend at Gardner-Webb's Red and Black Classic, Feb. 13-15 in Boiling Springs, N.C.
