MERION STATION, Pa. – After falling behind 4-0, the Lehigh softball team battled back with three runs in the fourth, but ultimately could get no closer in a 4-3 setback to Saint Joseph's Wednesday at SJU Softball Field. The Mountain Hawks had opportunities to tie or take the lead in both the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to capitalize.
Â
Senior Lindsey Martin and junior Sydney Parlett both reached base twice and drove in Lehigh's runs as the Mountain Hawks fall to 23-21 on the season.
Â
Saint Joseph's (26-19) raced to an early lead on Sierra Fretz's two-run double in the first inning. Jenna Currie homered with one out in the second, and then Fretz delivered another RBI double in the third to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Â
Lehigh was held without a hit until the top of the fourth when senior Rory Dudley singled with one out. After senior Maddy Schmeiser grounded into a force play, Martin doubled to left center, scoring pinch runner Wrigley Fanter to put the Mountain Hawks on the scoreboard. Sophomore Peyton Sward reached on an error and then stole second, putting two in scoring position for Parlett, who singled to right field scoring Martin and Sward to bring Lehigh within a run.
Â
Fanter singled with one out in the sixth and moved into scoring position when Martin walked. Sward then reached on an infield single, but Fanter was thrown out at home plate while trying to score the tying run.
Â
Sophomore Holly Lovett led off the seventh with a double to right center and pinch runner Lizzie Kern was sacrificed to third base, but Taylor Trowbridge came out of the bullpen to record the final two outs on a foul out and a pop out.
Â
Senior Maria Urban started in the circle for Lehigh and allowed four runs on six hits over three innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Maddy Clark allowed two hits with a walk and two strikeouts over three scoreless innings of relief.
Â
Six different players recorded one hit for Lehigh.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will host Boston University in a three-game series this weekend at Leadership Park. Saturday is Pride Day, presented by Lehigh's Pride Center and Office of Inclusive Excellence and Belonging, and Lehigh will honor its five-member senior class on Sunday.
