BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's cross country kicked off their 2024 campaign at the Lehigh Invite 6K, hosted on Lehigh's Goodman Campus cross country course. Senior Savanah Beavers finished in first place amongst all runners to earn her first collegiate win while the Mountain Hawks placed second amongst six competing teams.
"It was so great to see it all come together for Savanah today," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "On the course today, she was a much more poised, confident and calm looking competitor. I was pretty certain she was going to win it when she was about the 2.5 mile mark just by her response… She was ready to get it done."
Beavers, a senior from Stanford, Illinois, finished in ninth place at this very event last season. Not only did she earn her first collegiate race win, Beavers did so in dominant fashion. Her finish of 21:46.6 was a whole ten seconds faster than the Delaware runner who finished behind her in second.
"I've started my season at the Lehigh Invite every year, so it's been really nice to see the progress," said Beavers. "I was very eager to see what I had in the tank… I feel like I've maybe not had the confidence previously to race like that, so it was nice to see it all come together today."
Sophomores Devon Sutton and Grace Hughes were next to finish for the Mountain Hawks, earning 11th and 12th place in 22:42.4 and 22:42.7 respectively. Rounding out the top 20 for Lehigh was first-year Sadie Millett (14th, 22:49.2), first-year Brenna Dahlgren (16th, 22:52.7), sophomore Hope Trimmer (17th, 23:16.0) and first-year Chloe Browne (19th, 23:27.1).
"It was the first glimpse of the first-years… I saw some real competitive fire in a couple of the first-years," said Utesch. "That just tells me what I have to work with, and I'm pretty excited about some of the talent we're going to have in that class going forward."
Lehigh earned second place as a team only behind the Delaware Blue Hens. Other teams competing at the invite were Saint Joseph's, Moravian, Muhlenberg and NJIT.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday, September 13 at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe, hosted by Penn State University.
