Lehigh To Host Patriot League Championship Beginning Friday At Saucon Valley CC

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team will not have to travel far in an attempt to defend its Patriot League championship. The Mountain Hawks will host the eight-team, 54-hole Patriot League Championship beginning Friday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The tournament will feature 18 holes of play Friday, Saturday and Sunday with tee times all three days beginning at 9 a.m.

The Mountain Hawks captured their fourth Patriot League Championship last year in Phoenix, Md. Lehigh's previous Patriot League titles were won in 1996, 1997 and 2013. The Mountain Hawks will compete against Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Loyola and Navy as Lehigh hosts the men's championship at Saucon Valley for the first time since 2018.

Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 7,091 yards from the championship tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.

Lehigh's championship entry will include graduate students David Hurly and Sam Barton, senior Edmund Broderick, junior Jahan Bains, and sophomores Will Caronchi and Aiden LeBlanc.

Hurly, Barton and Broderick were all part of last year's championship-winning six-man squad. Broderick is the top returning finisher from last year's tournament after tying for 16th place. Barton is a two-time All-Patriot League honoree tying for third in 2021 and tying for 10th place in 2022.

Lehigh enters the Patriot League Championship coming off a team title at Lafayette's ABARTA Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational Apr. 14-15 and then a convincing 14-6 match-play win over Lafayette to retain the Presidents Cup for a fourth straight year. Hurly, Barton and Caronchi along with sophomore Jake Roth went 3-0 in the match play event combining doubles and singles action.

Hurly tied for third to lead Lehigh at Lafayette's invitational. He also won two events during the fall season – the Temple Invitational and the Lehigh Invitational at Saucon Valley.

Bains, LeBlanc and Caronchi will be making their Patriot League Championship debuts.

The 2023 Patriot League Championship was Lehigh's fourth team victory of the 2022-23 season. This year Lehigh has two team titles as the Mountain Hawks won their own invitational prior to winning Lafayette's tournament.

The top five individual finishers will earn first team All-Patriot League honors including ties. Individuals finishing sixth to 10th place will earn second team All-Patriot League honors. The team champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Golf Regionals along with the individual medalist if he is not on the championship team.

Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.com.

On Friday, Lehigh will play with Colgate and Loyola, with their tee times beginning at 11 a.m.
