Mountain Hawks Sweep Saturday Non-League Twin Bill At Marist

4/13/2024 7:13:00 PM | Softball

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In its off weekend from Patriot League play, the Lehigh softball team went on the road and swept a doubleheader Saturday from defending MAAC champion Marist.

Senior Katelyn Young threw her third complete-game shutout in as many weekends, firing a three-hitter, supported by a five-run sixth inning as Lehigh took the opener 5-0. The Mountain Hawks scored 12 runs on 12 hits, highlighted by a six-run fourth inning in a 12-5 victory in the nightcap.

First-year Gracie Smith led Lehigh at the plate, going 5-for-8 on the day with two runs scored and three RBIs, as the Mountain Hawks improve to 22-14 overall and extend their winning streak to a dozen games.

Game one began as a pitcher's duel between Young and Maddie Pleasants with the game scoreless through the first five innings.

In the sixth, Lehigh loaded the bases with nobody out behind a single by first-year Peyton Sward, an error allowing graduate student Josie Charles to reach and a bunt single by Smith. Graduate student Emily Cimino was hit by a pitch, forcing home Sward with the game's first run. Marist recorded a pair of outs before first-year Holly Lovett singled up the middle, scoring two runs to give Lehigh a 3-0 lead. Junior Julia Mrochko capped the five-run inning with a two-run double.

Young retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced to secure her third complete game shutout of the season. She struck out four and did not walk a batter to improve to 13-7 on the season.

Lehigh opened game two with a pair of first-inning runs. Charles scored on a wild pitch and then junior Rory Dudley singled up the middle to bring Cimino home to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Marist (26-13) scored its first run of the day on Kaitlyn Husic's two-out home run in the second inning, but Lehigh took control of the contest with a six-run fourth inning.

Two runs came home for Lehigh on a throwing error after Sward reached on an infield single. Two batters later, Smith delivered a two-run double, followed by a Cimino RBI double to put the Mountain Hawks up 7-1. Cimino and Dudley later executed a double steal, with Cimino scoring to give the Mountain Hawks an 8-1 lead.

Smith added an RBI single in the fifth inning to put the Mountain Hawks up by eight, but Marist kept the game going on Pleasants' RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

Consecutive RBI doubles by sophomore Sydney Parlett and junior Maddy Schmeiser put Lehigh up 12-2 in the sixth, with Marist again avoiding the mercy rule after Lauren Morrell's three-run home run in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore Chloe Hess started in the circle for the Mountain Hawks and earned her second win of the season, allowing a run on three hits over four innings with a walk and six strikeouts. Junior Maria Urban threw the final three innings for the save, allowing one earned run on five hits.

The Mountain Hawks conclude their seven-game road trip on Wednesday when they visit Villanova for a single game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
