BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a strong finish to the fall season, the Lehigh men's golf team will finally get its spring campaign underway when the Mountain Hawks head west for the UC San Diego Invitational, beginning Sunday. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at the well-known Torrey Pines, with 18 holes contested Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The tournament will be the first of five spring events for the Mountain Hawks, culminating in late April when the defending Patriot League champions host the Patriot League Championship at Saucon Valley Country Club.
The Mountain Hawks closed out the fall season by winning the team title at the Lehigh Invitational in late October. Graduate student David Hurly closed out an outstanding fall by winning his second fall tournament with a score of two under par 142. Hurly led the Mountain Hawks in four out of five events, recording wins at the Lehigh Invitational and the Temple Invitational, and tying for fifth at The Doc Gimmler and the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate. Senior Edmund Broderick and junior Aidan Oehrle also finished top 10 at the Lehigh Invitational, with Broderick leading the Mountain Hawks at the fall-opening Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational.
Lehigh's team for the UC San Diego Invitational includes Hurly, Broderick, junior Jahn Bains, sophomores Aiden LeBlanc and Will Caronchi. First-year Matthew Quinn will compete as an individual.
Action on Sunday and Monday will begin with a 1 p.m. (PT) shotgun start from Torrey Pines, North Course, in La Jolla, Calif. Tuesday's final round begins with a 7 a.m. shotgun start. The North Course plays to a par 72 at 7,258 yards.
Participating teams include: Air Force, Bucknell, Denver, Fordham, Idaho, Lehigh, North Dakota State, Oklahoma Christian, Seattle U., Southern Utah, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV, Utah State and two teams from Yale.
Live scoring will be available on GolfStat.
Last year, the Mountain Hawks finished 13th out of 15 teams at Torrey Pines. Hurley tied for 14th place to lead the way for the Mountain Hawks, while Broderick, Oehrle, Sam Barton and Jake Roth all saw action.
Following the UC San Diego Invitational, Lehigh will play in Appalachian State's Irish Creek Collegiate, April 8-9 in Kannapolis, N.C. The Mountain Hawks will then play in Lafayette's ABARTA Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational, April 14-15 at Northampton Country Club.
The annual Presidents Cup match play event versus Lafayette has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 18.
Lehigh will then host the Patriot League Championship April 26-28 at Saucon Valley Country Club.
