Lehigh Edged 2-1 to Colgate Behind Late Goal

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Colgate Friday night at Ulrich Sports Complex as the Raiders netted the game-winning goal in the 89th minute. Cason Stafford put a shot right on goal and Blake Koski was there for the save but Colgate's Connor Cates was there for the rebound, who put it into the goal to give Colgate the late 2-1 edge.

"We really lost our structure and our discipline in the second half," said head coach Dean Koski. "When you do that against a team that's working really hard and competing against us, I don't think we matched that or exceeded that, and it's hard to win against any team in the Patriot League. We needed more leadership in games like this, and I don't think we had it. We have some growing pains. I'm disappointed for them, not at them."

With the loss, Lehigh dropped to 5-9-3 (3-4-1 PL) and the Raiders improved to 5-8-3 (3-3-2). Friday's game was a crucial one with a lot of implications in the Patriot League standings.

The game started off slow with both teams going into halftime deadlocked at zero. Perry Kingson had a chance to put Lehigh on top in the first half, but he missed his first penalty kick of his career in the 42nd minute after Colgate was called for a handball in the box.

Jack Beerling broke the deadlock in the 58th minute on a shot right outside of the box. Kingson had another chance at redemption in the 71st minute as Lehigh was awarded another penalty kick on a handball in the box and he would convert his eighth penalty kick of his career to tie things at 1-1.

Lehigh had multiple opportunities in the final minutes but Colgate's Oliver Townend came up big to make some crucial saves. Townend finished the night with a game-high of five saves. Senior goalkeeper Blake Koski tallied four saves.

Colgate held a 12-9 advantage in shots and both teams finished with six shots on goal. Kingson had a team-high of three shots.

Lehigh will take on Lafayette on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Easton, Pa., in the regular season finale. The Mountain Hawks will need a win, and help to qualify for the Patriot League Tournament. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
