BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off of back-to-back wins, Lehigh volleyball returned to action from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Friday night to take on the Bucknell Bison. Despite it being a very competitive match the whole way through, the Bison defeated the Mountain Hawks in three sets on Dig Pink Night.
"Tonight was a hard-fought match," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Every play was a grind and I thought our players did a great job fighting."
The Mountain Hawks celebrated Dig Pink in recognition of breast cancer awareness. All week, the program partnered with the HOPE Venture Fund and the HEADstrong Foundation to help support families battling breast cancer.
Lehigh (12-8, 5-5 PL) opened the match on fire, jumping ahead to a 7-0 lead over Bucknell (16-2, 8-1 PL). The Mountain Hawks were able to maintain a seven-point advantage at 11-4, but the Bison began to slowly narrow the gap. Lehigh stayed ahead in front all the way until they reached set point at 24-23. However, Bucknell was able to tie and send the first set to extra points. Lehigh and Bucknell traded blows until the Bison eventually stole the first set 29-27.
Bucknell gained an early advantage in set two, leading 10-6 through the first 16 points. Lehigh then used an 8-2 run to turn the momentum back in their favor to lead 14-12. From here, neither team gained much separation, leading to a 21-20 score with Bucknell in the lead. The Bison uncorked a 4-1 run to close out the second set 25-21, putting them one away from the victory.
Lehigh and Bucknell once again found themselves in a close set to open the third, as neither team gained more than a two-point lead for the majority of the frame. With the score knotted at 19, the Mountain Hawks finally broke through to take a 22-19 lead. Needing a run to get back into the set, the Bison found one, outscoring Lehigh 6-1 down the stretch to clinch their eighth Patriot League win of the season.
Junior Natalie Luscomb led the Mountain Hawks offensively with 11 kills on the night. First-year Kamryn Utley notched a career-high 25 assists while senior Kyleigh Brown paced the Mountain Hawks defensively with 32 digs.
The Mountain Hawks will travel east on Sunday afternoon for the season's second installment of The Rivalry against Lafayette College. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in Easton.
"Sunday is another match, we have to be resilient and get back to work," said Keckler. "The rivalry is always a fun match, so we're looking forward to competing and seeing how we bounce back."
