EASTON, Pa. – Patriot League play rolled on for Lehigh volleyball on Sunday afternoon against Lafayette College for this season's second rivalry match. The Mountain Hawks earned a 3-0 sweep of their rivals for the second time in 2024.
"It felt great to get this win," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Beating Lafayette on their court is always a great day."
Lehigh (13-8, 6-5 PL) started fast against Lafayette (6-14, 1-10 PL), jumping ahead to a 5-1 lead. Sophomore Jaidyn Garcia provided six kills in the frame, two of which came back-to-back to extend Lehigh's lead to six into the media timeout. The Leopards started to mount a comeback, eventually cutting the Mountain Hawk lead to two. However, Lehigh closed out the first set with a 4-2 run to win 25-21
The second set saw the Mountain Hawks dominate, defeating the Leopards 25-18. Lehigh posted an outstanding .385 hitting percentage on 17 kills in the frame. Senior Megan Schulte added seven kills in the set to help the Mountain Hawks gain a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Lafayette started in control of the third set, beginning the period with a 6-2 run. Lehigh quickly evened the score and eventually gained the lead themselves after a 5-0 run made it 11-8. The Leopards crawled back to regain the advantage at 13-12, but another 5-0 Lehigh run put the Mountain Hawks back on top. Lehigh wouldn't relinquish the lead again, winning set three 25-20 to clinch their second sweep over Lafayette this season.
Schulte and senior Emily Stewart led the Mountain Hawks with 10 kills each. First-year Kamryn Utley and senior Makena Smith led the team with 18 and 16 assists respectively while senior Kyleigh Brown tallied a team-high 27 digs. Lehigh's defense was on display as well, notching 14 total blocks and 78 digs as a team in only three sets.
"We definitely worked to be better disciplined on defense and our players stepped up and made some great plays," said Keckler.
The Mountain Hawks return to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m. to take on Loyola Maryland. Lehigh will then host Senior Day on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Navy.
"Next week is a big week," said Keckler. "Loyola and Navy are great teams and we will need to attack both with tenacity. It will also be a fun weekend as we look to celebrate an amazing senior class that has left such a great mark in our program."
