Mountain Hawks Fall 3-0 To Split Series With Loyola

11/1/2024 9:55:00 PM | Volleyball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After sweeping rival Lafayette on the road in Easton last Sunday, Lehigh volleyball returned to action from Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Friday night to take on the Loyola Greyhounds. The Mountain Hawks dropped a 3-0 decision to split the season series against the Greyhounds.

Lehigh (13-9, 6-6 PL) and Loyola (8-13, 6-6 PL) opened the first set pretty evenly, as the lead switched hands four times through the match's first 15 points. The Greyhounds never mustered more than a three-point advantage until they were able to extend their advantage at 19-14. The Mountain Hawks rallied to trail by only one point at 21-20, but the Greyhounds rode a more efficient hitting percentage to a 25-22 win.

The Mountain Hawks started hot in the second, opening the frame on a 5-1 run. Lehigh maintained the lead until a four-point Loyola swing put them in front 10-9. The lead then traded hands several times until Loyola gained a 21-17 lead off the heels of a 5-1 run. The Greyhounds ultimately closed out the frame 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in sets.

With their backs against the wall, the Mountain Hawks needed to find a spark in set three. Lehigh led 6-2 early, but Loyola crawled back to cut their deficit to one at 12-11. The Greyhounds remained vigilant, conducting a 6-0 run to lead 18-15 and put themselves in a solid position to close out the match. However, the Mountain Hawks rallied, eventually tying the set at 24 and 25 apiece. Despite their late comeback efforts, Loyola secured the final two points of the set to win 27-25 and clinch their sixth Patriot League win of the year.

"It was a hard-fought match and we outplayed them in a lot of areas, but ultimately they hit the ball better and that was the game," said head coach Alexa Keckler.

The Mountain Hawks were led offensively by sophomore Alysia Fingall, who tallied nine kills on the night. Senior Makena Smith's 24 assists were a game-high while senior Kyleigh Brown led Lehigh defensively with 18 digs.

Lehigh will honor its four seniors (Smith, Brown, Emily Stewart and Megan Schulte) on Saturday at home against the Navy Midshipmen for Senior Day. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. with senior recognitions taking place prior to first serve.

"Looking forward to celebrating the seniors and fighting for a win to keep us in the playoff hunt," said Keckler.
