NEW YORK – Lehigh men's cross country competed in their final regular season meet on Friday morning at the IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. The Mountain Hawks put forth a strong showing, placing seventh while senior Kevin Harvey took home second place overall.
"Our team took a nice positive step forward today," said head coach Todd Etters. "We have more in the tank and need to improve in two weeks to accomplish our objectives. Today showed that many of the teams we want to beat in the league are right there."
After placing first for the Mountain Hawks at the Paul Short Run earlier this month, Harvey showed out in today's race. The senior from Summit, N.J. finished second overall out of 261 runners, completing the 8K in 24:36.5.
"Kevin ran a great race, probably the best of his career," said Etters. "He made a bold move at 5K to take the lead, and he was rewarded with a runner-up finish. He is exactly where we want him to be. The rest of the team needs to follow his lead and challenge themselves more."
A pack of Lehigh runners finished behind Harvey, starting with senior Aidan Lynch who placed 35th with a time of 25:19.9. Finishing closely behind Lynch was junior Dan Malatesta (36th, 25:20.0) and sophomore Ryan Baker (38th, 25:22.0).
Other finishing runners for the Mountain Hawks included sophomore Noah Zahn (62nd, 25:42.2), first-year Ben Connell (123rd, 26:22.4), first-year Will Mrozinski (128th, 26:26.0), junior Connor Malinger (129th, 26:26.5), first-year Charlie Butler (136th, 26:30.3), junior Thomas Arnold (142nd, 26:33.4), junior Max Leffler (162nd, 26:43.5), first-year Jared Weiss (26:43.5), junior Adam Barbato (171st, 26:51.1), junior Alex Heidemann (196th, 27:21.9), sophomore Dylan Cunningham (199th, 27:23.0) and junior Henry Burd (200th, 27:23.5).
Lehigh's next race will be at the Patriot League Championships at Lafayette on Saturday, November 2.
"At the Patriot League Championship, we need to be willing to fight right from the start," said Etters. "It is now a battle of the mind, and we will take the next two weeks to make sure we are prepared."
