BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's cross country competed at the Lehigh Paul Short Run presented by ASICS on Saturday, an event that Lehigh University has put on for 49 years. The Mountain Hawks placed 35th in the Gold 8k race and had runners participate in the Open 8k while Yale took home the top team prize with a score of 101.

The Mountain Hawks were led by Kevin Harvey, who finished 80th overall with a time of 24:57.4. Harvey's finish was the highest a Lehigh runner has placed at the Paul Short Run since Seth Slavin in 2019 (74th).

"Kevin is such a rock, very stable performer, I feel like there's no stage that's too big for him," said head coach Todd Etters. "I think he's feeling out being one of the top guys. He won a Patriot League title last year, so you're going to have a bigger target on you. He's performing well, he's training well, and if we run this race next week, he's probably higher than 80th is my guess."

Harvey was followed by first-year Thomas Smigo who clocked in with a time of 25:12.4 to finish 123rd. Smigo's finish is the highest that a first-year Lehigh runner has placed at the Paul Short Run since 2010. Coming in third for the Mountain Hawks was junior Aidan Lynch, who finished 263rd with a time of 26:05.0.

"I've seen Thomas race a lot over the years, he's a Lehigh Valley native that has been doing great things for his entire career since he was a freshman in high school," said Etters. "I think it took him a race or two in college to figure that out, but now you can see what kind of guy we have in him."

Other finishers for Lehigh included Dan Malatesta (26:22.8) and Derek Coceano (26:22.9) at 302 and 303, Noah Zahn (26:38.6) at 329, Henry Burd (26:56.1) at 348 and Alex Heidemann (27:57.0) at 373.

Lehigh finished the race posting 935 total team points, a 260-point improvement from last year's race. 43 different schools competed in Saturday's Gold 8k race.

The top finishers in the men's Open 8k race for Lehigh were Dylan Cunningham (196th, 27:03.2), Max Leffler (211th, 27:12.6) and Connor Malinger (219th, 27:16.6).

"Top to bottom, [the Paul Short Run] is something that Lehigh Athletics takes pride in," said Etters. "I think that when teams come to this event, they've heard about it, and there's teams that come back year after year… This is our sport at some of its finest, and we take a lot of pride in being able to be a small part of what our sport is really capable of."

The Mountain Hawks will travel to New York City for the IC4A/ECAC Championship on Friday, October 13 after taking a week away from competition. Lehigh is scheduled to compete at 10:45 a.m. that morning in the 'Big Apple'.
