BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's cross country competed at the IC4A Championships this morning, their final competition before this month's Patriot League Championships. The men placed 19th in a pool of 34 teams and competed five runners in the Open 8k in addition to the ten Mountain Hawks running in the main race.
Lehigh's top finisher was first-year Thomas Smigo, who built upon his solid performance at the Paul Short Run on September 30. The Kintnersville, Pa. product finished with a time of 24:52.5, which put him in 47th place out of 310 runners. Smigo was the second overall first-year runner in the race and seventh overall finisher from the Patriot League.
"[Thomas] is really tough and confident, which are major factors in his success," said head coach Todd Etters. "The best part is that I think his best races are ahead of him. He deserves a lot of credit for adjusting so quickly to college racing and I believe we can all learn a lot from him in regards to how you have to challenge yourself."
The Mountain Hawks finished two other runners within the top 100 runners in addition to Smigo. Junior Aidan Lynch came in second place for Lehigh, coming in 66th place with a time of 25:03.2. Junior Kevin Harvey rounded out Lehigh's top three, clocking in at 25:17.8 in 88th place.
Other finishers in this morning's race include Alex Heidemann (129th, 25:40.0), Derek Coceano (164th, 25:55.8), Dan Malatesta (182nd, 26:03.7), Noah Zahn (217th, 26:19.7), Connor Malinger (249th, 26:46.6), Henry Burd (253rd, 26:51.7) and Max Leffler (268th, 27:09.3).
The Mountain Hawks scored 456 points, which was good for 19th place overall in the race.
Lehigh also had five runners compete in the Open 8k race. The top three finishers for the Mountain Hawks were Thomas Arnold (45th, 26:33.7), Carter LoPresti (55th, 26:52.6) and Ryan Baker (56th, 26:53.9).
The Mountain Hawks now set their sights on the Patriot League Championships, which are set to be hosted by Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. on October 28.
"We realize that our season will be judged by what we do in two weeks at the Patriot League Championships," said Etters. "We aren't where we need to be and we have to embrace that in order to progress. There will be extra pressure and we just have to match the intensity of the championship with composure, confidence, and fight."
