BETHLEHEM, Pa. - First-year Aminah Baruwa scored her second career goal to lift the Mountain Hawks over Penn 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"Today was a great win for a multitude of reasons," said head coach Lauren Calabrese. "We played with intensity and resolve. Our pressure and commitment to keeping the ball was well executed."
Â
The Mountain Hawks battled the Quakers scoreless for much of the first half. In the 36th minute, sophomore Sophia Lis dished the ball to Baruwa, who connected to give Lehigh the 1-0 lead to round out the first half. The rookie's second goal comes after scoring the game-tying goal in the 2-2 draw with Cornell last Sunday.
Â
Penn's best chance to tie the game came in the 62nd minute when Magali Capdevila shot the ball past Lehigh goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou, but freshman Mia Tuckwood cleared the attempt off the goal line.Â
Â
Junior forward Corinne Lyght led Lehigh in shots with three, as Baruwa and fifth-year Ryelle Shuey each tallied two. The Mountain Hawks outshot Penn 11-8 with seven shots on goal compared to the Quakers' three.
Â
Ousouljoglou made two saves in the victory. Penn goalkeeper Laurence Gladu recorded six saves on the afternoon.
Â
Lehigh (2-1-3) has a break from weekday competition this week, playing next on Saturday at 7 p.m. at St. John's.
