Lehigh Caps Off 2-0 Weekend with Win Over Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Lehigh field hockey team earned its second win of the weekend on Sunday, defeating Hofstra 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
""This team continues to impress me with their ability to stick to our tactical game plan, but adapt it when necessary," said head coach Kelsi Lykens. "Today, we were able to make in game modifications that helped us come out on top. Driving home from two road games this weekend with wins feels good."
Hofstra took the lead early in the second quarter, as Samantha Spera got the Pride on the board.
Just over two minutes later, the Mountain Hawks drew a penalty corner. Senior Lotte Smorenburg netted the tying goal off an assist from sophomore KK Sauve. This was Smorenburg's second goal of the season and Sauve's first point for Lehigh.
The game remained tied 1-1 from Smoreburg's goal until the beginning of the fourth quarter. Sophomore Lela Boermeester scored her first-career goal to give the Mountain Hawks the lead with under 13 minutes remaining in the game. Senior Julia Gatelin provided the assist on the go-ahead goal.
Sophomore Maddie Kandra scored her second goal of the season with 4:50 remaining in the game, sealing the 3-1 victory.
Lehigh outshot Hofstra 15-6, with 11 shots on goal. The Mountain Hawks also out-cornered the Pride 9-2.
Junior goalkeeper Jenny Canoni played all 60 minutes in the cage, recording three saves. Hofstra's goalkeeper Hella Vorpagel made eight saves.
The Mountain Hawks (3-1) are back in action next Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Saint Francis at Ulrich Field.
