Women's Cross Country To Race Lafayette In The Rivalry On Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team got off to a great start to 2023, earning second and third place finishes at the Lehigh Invitational on September 1 and Harry Lang Invitational on September 2. After taking a week's hiatus, the Mountain Hawks look to build on that success on Saturday morning for the latest installment of The Rivalry against Lafayette in Easton.
Lehigh looks to make it 18 consecutive dual meet wins over Lafayette, dating all the way back to 2005. The Mountain Hawks lead the all-time series against the Leopards 28-14. A year ago, the Mountain Hawks earned a 23-34 victory over the Leopards on the Goodman Campus cross country course. Lehigh finished 11 runners in the top 15 on route to the dual meet victory.
During the first weekend of the season, the Mountain Hawks split their team in two, sending one half to Goodman Campus for the Lehigh Invitational and the other up north to Colgate University for the Harry Lang Invitational. Despite having fewer runners available at each event than much of their competition, the Mountain Hawks still finished strongly both as a team and individually.
Lehigh placed second out of six teams at their own 6K race, highlighted by strong finishes from the team's upperclassmen. Junior Savanah Beavers finished first for Lehigh, claiming the ninth overall spot with a time of 22:15.8. Seniors Lindsay MacLellan and Abigail Tenreiro followed suit with times of 22:23.8 and 23:04.2 to finish in second and third for the Mountain Hawks.
At the Harry Lang Invitational 5K race, Lehigh claimed third place out of nine teams while placing three in the top ten. Sophomore Lucy Afanasewicz led the pack for the Mountain Hawks with a fourth-place overall finish with a time of 18:17.0. Junior Maddison Hayes wasn't far behind at 18:34.7 and an eighth-place finish while senior Christina Yakaboski placed tenth at 18:35.3.
Saturday's meet will be run on Lafayette's campus in Easton, Pa. with a scheduled start time of 10 a.m.
