BOSTON – One of the winningest seasons in Lehigh softball history came to an end Friday as the Mountain Hawks dropped a pair of games at the Patriot League Tournament at BU Softball Field. In Friday morning's winner's bracket game against top-seed Boston University a five-run second inning doomed the Mountain Hawks in an 8-3 setback. Lehigh then had a rematch with Army West Point where a number of missed opportunities resulted in a 6-2 Black Knights victory.
Lehigh's season concludes at 40-14. It marks the sixth time in program history that the Mountain Hawks hit the 40-win mark.
Boston University's Kate Pryor opened the scoring in the five-run second inning with a one-out RBI single. Two batters later, Lauren Keleher cleared the bases with a three-run triple to put the Terriers up 4-0. Kayla Roncin's RBI single capped the five-run frame.
The Mountain Hawks pushed across a two-out run in the fifth when graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich reached on an error and then scored on an RBI triple by senior Josie Charles.
BU's Caitlin Coker went 4-for-4 and delivered a two-run single to put the Terriers up 7-1 in the sixth. Emily Gant added an RBI single to put the Terriers up by seven.
Junior Amanda Greaney belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, her second home run of the season.
Allison Boaz held Lehigh to four hits, with first-year Sydney Parlett going 2-for-3 to lead the way.
Barjaktarovich had her school record hitting streak end at 35 consecutive games.
Junior Katelyn Young started in the circle and was charged with five runs on six hits in 1.1 innings before giving way to first-year Chloe Hess.
The Army West Point game began with Young dealing a 1-2-3 top of the first and Barjaktarovich setting another school record in the bottom of the first. Barjaktarovich led off the home first with a single to third base, her 79th hit of the season, eclipsing the previous mark of 78 set by Kim Miller '96 back in 1995.
Lehigh left two runners on base in the first, a sign of things to come as the Mountain Hawks left 16 runners on base against the Black Knights.
Sophomore Lindsey Martin opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning that scored Parlett. Charles then brought home a run when she reached on an error with the bases loaded as Lehigh led 2-0 after two innings.
Army (21-36) tied the game with two runs in the third on Taylor Brown's two-run single, and took a 4-2 lead with two in the fourth behind a Lauren Little RBI single and a Lehigh error.
The Mountain Hawks had base runners in every inning but as the game progressed could not get the clutch hit when needed.
Little added another RBI single in the sixth to put Army up 5-2.
Lehigh loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth but Amanda Eaglin struck out junior Brooke Cannon and got sophomore Rory Dudley to fly out to end the threat.
Brown tacked on another run for Army in the seventh with a home run. Down four and down to its final three outs, Lehigh loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. Olivia Farris relieved Eaglin in the circle and the Black Knights recorded back-to-back force plays erasing runners at home plate before getting senior Emily Cimino to fly out to deep left to end the game.
Lehigh out-hit Army 11-7 for the game, with Parlett going 3-for-3 and Charles and Martin both adding two hits apiece.
Young was tagged with her second loss of the day, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits in 3.2 innings. Hess allowed two runs, one earned in 3.1 innings. Collectively, Lehigh pitchers walked five and hit two batters, which allowed Army to battle back to take the lead.
"From a softball standpoint it was a microcosm of our season." Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "We left a lot of runners on base this year and we have to figure out a way to knock those runs in, in meaningful moments. We could've broken open the game early and we didn't and then from a pitching standpoint we had a lot of walks and hit batters, which hurt us a little bit. That has been a bit of an Achilles' heel for us in games that we've lost. We'll have to go back to the drawing board and get better in those areas."
Army will face Boston University in Saturday's championship round with the Terriers needing one win to claim the title and the Black Knights needing two.
Friday's losses end a Lehigh season filled with highlights. The Mountain Hawks defeated No. 7/9 Alabama on opening day for the program's first-ever win over a top 10 team and had an 11-game winning streak that ran from February to mid-March. Young threw her first career no-hitter against Monmouth on March 22 and Lehigh won its first 15 Patriot League games and ended Boston University's 28-game winning streak on the final day of the regular season.
"To get to 40 wins you have to be a really good team," Troyan said. "We did a lot of great things, but what we have to be able to do is to be able to perform down the stretch. We certainly didn't do that today. You can see from Army's celebration, that whenever you beat Lehigh it's a pretty big deal."
Lehigh went 6-6 against teams ranked in the top 75 of the May 8 RPI rankings.
Barjaktarovich is the only player Lehigh will lose to graduation. She exits with school records for career hits (265) and single season hits (79) along with a school record 35-game hitting streak.
