BOSTON – With 4.3 seconds remaining after the Terriers made a couple of free throws, a last-second three-point shot for Mountain Hawks went off the back of the rim as the Lehigh men's basketball team dropped the final game of the regular season on the road at Boston University, 59-56, inside Case Gym Saturday afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks (16-13, 11-6 PL) had their two-game winning streak ended by the Terriers while BU (15-15, 8-10 PL) won its third straight contest, including winning four out of the last five meetings against Lehigh.
A back-and-forth first half saw both squads exchange baskets, with neither team leading by more than six points and six ties and lead changes in the first 20 minutes of action. The Mountain Hawks held an advantage for most of the first half, including a six-point lead after senior Reed Fenton made a mid-range jumper to give Lehigh a 25-19 advantage. BU managed to put together an 11-3 run to end the first half and the Mountain Hawks would be behind 30-28 at halftime.
Â
The Terriers started off the second half with seven points to extend their lead to 37-28 with 17:50 on the clock. Lehigh countered with five points to get within four, 37-33, but BU scored the next five points to stretch its lead back to nine points, 42-33, with 11:26 remaining. A 10-0 run for the Mountain Hawks put them back in front, 43-42, and tied the game at 45-45 with under seven minutes to play. The next basket by the Terriers would give them the lead for good, but Lehigh kept it within two possessions.
BU went ahead by four points, 57-53, with 10 seconds remaining off a pair of free throws, but the Mountain Hawks answered quickly went junior Jalin Sinclair drained a three-pointer with 4.3 seconds on the clock to get within a point, 57-56. After a couple of foul shots from BU, the Brown and White had a last-second opportunity that saw sophomore Tyler Whitney-Sidney get off a three-pointer for the tie at the buzzer, but it bounced of the back of the rim as Lehigh falls to the Terriers, 59-56.
Â
Three Mountain Hawks finished in double figures led by sophomore Keith Higgins Jr. with 13 points and added five rebounds, two steals and one assist. Whitney-Sidney finished with 12 points to go with three boards and one steal and senior Evan Taylor rounded out double-digit scores with 10 points and a team-high nine boards and a blocked shot.
Just finishing outside of double figures was junior Dominic Parolin, who contributed nine points and eight rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot. Sinclair finished with five points, two assists, two rebounds and a steal while Fenton scored four points with a block and an assist. Sophomore Ben Knostman tossed in three points, all from the free-throw line.
