Bonus Points Help Lehigh Roll Past Bucknell, 32-6

LEWISBURG, Pa. – After dropping the opening bout of the night in sudden victory, the Lehigh wrestling rolled off eight straight victories, including five bonus point wins, in a 32-6 win over Bucknell Friday night at Davis Gym. Senior Josh Humphreys started the run with his 11th win and second fall of the season, and the run was capped by a 6-4 decision by true first-year Ryan Crookham in his dual meet debut.

The upperweight trio of Tate Samuelson, Michael Beard and Nathan Taylor all won major decisions to help Lehigh improve to 8-9 on the dual season.

"It was good," Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro said. "Traveling and getting off that bus after a hard week of practice, but the guys responded pretty well."

Bucknell opened the dual with a come-from-behind win at 149 as Dylan Chappell erased an early 4-2 deficit to defeat sophomore Manzona Bryant IV 8-6 in sudden victory. Chappell scored late in the third period to tie the bout and then won it early in overtime.

In his second match back, Humphreys pinned Nick Delp as the first period buzzer sounded. After an early takedown, Humphreys had Delp on his back for a pair of four point near falls, but despite a lot of hard work could not get the pin. Finally, referee Brian Murphy slapped the mat at the three minute mark, giving Humphreys the fall and Lehigh a 6-0 lead.

"Just walking on the mat a week later, Josh looked a lot better," Santoro said. "He got his weight under control and you could just see how much better he looked. He had that look in his eye like he was ready to go.

Connor Herceg earned the start at 165 and picked up his first dual win of the season, scoring three first period takedowns on the way to a 9-6 decision over Chase Barlow.

Senior AJ Burkhart followed with a 7-3 win over Sam Barnes at 174 to put Lehigh up 12-3 after four bouts.

Samuelson dominated Mason McCready in a 16-3 major decision while Beard following with a 24-12 major over Nolan Springer. Beard appeared headed for his seventh technical fall of the season before Springer scored a late takedown to keep it to a major decision.

Taylor was impressive in an 11-0 major decision over Dorian Crosby in a matchup of nationally-ranked heavyweights. Taylor scored the first takedown and led 6-0 after one period following an impressive four point tilt. He added two more takedowns, an escape a stall point and riding time to complete Lehigh's third straight bonus win.

"Nathan just fought hard against a really good opponent," Santoro said. "He did a nice job getting bonus points."

First-year Carter Bailey made it four consecutive bonus wins with a 16-0 technical fall over Grayson McLellan at 125. Bailey had a trio of four point near falls in the first period before ending the bout at the 3:12 mark with his second takedown.

Crookham stepped in for Connor McGonagle to make his dual meet debut against No. 25 Kurt Phipps and scored two takedowns, one in each of the first two periods. He added a third period escape and riding time, fighting off several quality attempts from Phipps late in the bout to hold on for a 6-4 victory.

"We wanted to get him a few more matches this year," Santoro said of Crookham. "He got hurt at Midlands and has only been back for a few weeks so he has some things he hasn't been able to work on. He just needs to get back to doing those things that he knows how to do, over and over again."

Bucknell claimed the final bout as Darren Miller edged Malyke Hines 4-2 in a matchup of ranked wrestlers at 141.

The Mountain Hawks will travel to Princeton on Saturday to close out the dual meet season against the Tigers, with match time set for 6 p.m. from Jadwin Gym in New Jersey. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
