Lehigh Concludes Non-League Schedule With Trip To Marist

12/29/2023 1:08:00 PM | Men's Basketball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh men's basketball hits the road one last time prior to the new year and the beginning of the Patriot League season. The Mountain Hawks will complete a home-and-home with the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Lehigh (2-8) has squared off against Marist (7-3) seven times, holding a perfect 7-0 record over the Red Foxes. The teams first met in the 1981-82 season, resulting in a narrow 70-68 victory for the Mountain Hawks. The two teams played the first game of a home-and-home series in 2022 when Marist fell to Lehigh 64-54 in Bethlehem.

If Lehigh defeats Marist, it would mark the first road win for the Mountain Hawks on the season. In addition, a win would extend Lehigh's win-streak over Marist to eight games and mark the third overall victory for the Mountain Hawks this season.

After picking up a win over Cairn on December 9, Lehigh traveled to Boston College on December 21, where they ultimately fell to the Eagles 85-69. A career-night from BC's Claudell Harris Jr. helped propel the Eagles to the victory over Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks enter Saturday's game as the highest-scoring team in the Patriot League, averaging a league-high 74.9 points per game. In addition, Lehigh's leading scorer Keith Higgins Jr. also leads the league with a mark of 16.9 points per game. Tyler Whitney-Sidney is Lehigh's second leading scorer at 13.2 points per game, which ranks fifth in the Patriot League.

After going 13-20 a season ago and finishing 6-14 in the MAAC conference, the Marist Red Foxes have had a successful start to their 2023-24 campaign. The Red Foxes sit at a record of 7-3, including 2-0 in MAAC conference play. Marist had been riding a five-game winning streak before they fell to Notre Dame by four points in their last time out. The team's leading scorer is sophomore Max Allen II, who is currently averaging a team-high 12.4 points per game on 59.5% from the floor. Although Allen is Marist's only player averaging double-digits, much of the team's success can be attributed to their defense, which currently ranks ninth in the nation in fewest points per game.

Saturday's game will be aired on ESPN+.
