BETHLEHEM, Pa. – 'Feast Week' rolls on in college hoops around the country, and Lehigh men's basketball is primed for a big test on Black Friday. The Mountain Hawks will travel to Rhode Island to take on the Providence Friars of the Big East conference the day after Thanksgiving.
Friday's meeting between the Mountain Hawks and Friars will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools. The game will be the fifth matchup against a Big East opponent under Brett Reed, with his record sitting at 1-3 against the conference. Lehigh's win came by way of an 86-74 victory at DePaul in 2014.
With a win on Friday, Lehigh would pick up its first-ever victory over the Friars. Brett Reed's all-time record against Big East teams would move to 2-3. Lehigh would earn its first victory over a power conference opponent since defeating Mississippi State in 2016 and the Mountain Hawks would win their first away game of the season.
Lehigh (1-4) fell by a score of 88-79 to Monmouth on Tuesday in the two teams' third meeting in as many years. All five Lehigh starters scored in double-figures for the first time this season. Keith Higgins Jr. led the group with 20 points followed by Tyler Whitney-Sidney (12p), Bube Momah (12p), Dominic Parolin (11p) and Jalin Sinclair (11p). The Mountain Hawks shot over 60% from the three-point line in the first half of Tuesday's loss, but excellent outside shooting from the Hawks in both the first and second halves helped earn them the victory.
Providence (4-1) ushers in a new era of basketball following the departure of longtime head coach Ed Cooley. Former George Mason head coach and professional player Kim English was named his replacement on March 29. The Friars have posted a 4-1 record thus far under the guidance of English. Providence's roster boasts seven newcomers, including three who followed English from George Mason. The Friars' top scorer is Devin Carter, who is currently averaging 16.5 points per game on 50% shooting. The Friars rank first in the Big East in blocks per game (7.0). Providence defeated Georgia 71-64 in their last time out in the 2023 Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship consolation game.
Friday's game will be aired on FS2.
