Lehigh Drops 3-1 Match Against Army

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks came out with high intensity to win the first set against Army West Point but were unable to hold on as they fell to the Black Knights 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Lehigh volleyball team moves to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in league play while Army improves to 8-6 overall and 4-0 in the league.Â
Lehigh opened up Saturday's match in a dominating fashion going on an early 3-0 run in the first set. The Mountain Hawks continued to play with intensity during the first set but the Black Knights showed no signs of backing down as they went on a run of their own to bring the score within two points.Â
Sophomore Megan Schulte ended Army's 3-0 run with a kill to get Lehigh to 24. An attack error from the Black Knights secured Lehigh's 25-22 win in the first set.Â
Going into the second set, roles reversed as the Black Knights opened up with a 3-0 run of their own. Lehigh was able to fight its way back, cutting the deficit to one. Six consecutive points for Army led to an 11-5 lead midway through the set.Â
The Mountain Hawks went on to score four more points before Army won the second set 25-11, tying the overall score at 1-1.Â
Both teams kept things interesting in the third and fourth sets with the Mountain Hawks and Black Knights shifting momentum and taking turns taking the lead. Army went on to win the third and fourth set 25-21 to win its fifth consecutive match.Â
Schulte had a match-high 15 kills while first-year Natalie Luscomb added 12. Fellow first-year Madison McCartney finished with a team-high attack percentage of .273 and added five blocks for the Mountain Hawks.Â
As a team, Lehigh hit .163 compared to Army's .218. For the Black Knights, Julia Johnson finished with 11 kills while Savannah Bray added ten.Â
The Mountain Hawks will head to Washington D.C. to take on American on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. Following Friday's match, Lehigh will travel to Annapolis, Md. to battle Navy on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m.Â
