Mountain Hawks Unable to Battle Back Against American

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lehigh volleyball team put up a fight in Bender Arena on Friday night but was unable to bounce back from the Eagles' offensive intensity as the Mountain Hawks (10-7, 1-4) fell in four sets to American.Â
Lehigh kept things close during the first set but the Eagles took three straight points to extend their lead to 16-10. The Mountain Hawks battled back but were unable to overcome American as they fell 25-21 in the first set.Â
The Eagles opened up the second set with a 7-0 run but Lehigh showed no signs of backing down. The Mountain Hawks responded with six consecutive points but still found themselves trailing 8-7. With five times in the second set alone, the Eagles picked up the 25-22 win to lead the match 2-0.Â
American entered the third set with the same offensive intensity that was shown in the previous two sets. The Mountain Hawks responded with runs of their own to slowly take the lead away from the Eagles. With the score tied at 19, Lehigh won three straight points to secure the 22-19 lead.Â
A service error from American's Rachel Bennett gave Lehigh the 24-21 lead before sophomore Megan Schulte secured the set win for the Mountain Hawks. Assisted by Emily Stewart, Schulte picked up her eighth kill of the match to give Lehigh the 25-21 win and put the Mountain Hawks within one.Â
Entering the fourth set, the Eagles and Mountain Hawks went back and forth, tying the score four separate times before American went on a 4-0 run to extend its lead 19-12. Lehigh battled back with a run of its own to close in on American's lead and force the Eagles to call a timeout.Â
Trailing by four, kills from Stewart and first-year Natalie Luscomb put the Mountain Hawks within two but still trailing 24-22. The Eagles' secured the match point on a Lehigh attack error.Â
Schulte and Luscomb ended the match with a team-high 11 kills for the Mountain Hawks. Luscomb led the team with eight blocks while junior Sophia Meagher followed close behind with seven. Sophomore Kyleigh Brown added 20 digs for Lehigh while fellow sophomore Makenna Smith tallied 42 assists.Â
The Mountain Hawks will head to Annapolis, Md. for their second match of the weekend. Lehigh will battle Navy on Saturday at 4 p.m. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
