Lehigh Drops a Tough One to Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Mountain Hawks struggled to find their rhythm in Annapolis, Md. on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Navy in straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-19). Lehigh falls to 10-8 overall and 1-5 in the league while the Midshipmen improve to 8-7 and 5-1 in league play. 

Navy opened up the match with a 3-0 run in the first set. Lehigh responded with a run of its own to take the 5-4 lead. Both teams continued to battle throughout the first set, tying the score seven times. 

The Midshipmen extended their lead to 23-17 before they won the final two points of the set to take the 1-0 lead. 

The Mountain Hawks opened up the second set by winning the first point but Navy responded with a 4-0 run. Both teams continued to battle, tying the score twice before the Midshipmen jumped out to a 19-10 lead. 

Lehigh worked to close in on Navy's lead and cut the deficit but the Midshipmen showed no signs of slowing down. A kill from Navy's Ashley Warren secured the 25-15 win for the Midshipmen and extended their lead to 2-0. 

Going into the third set, the Mountain Hawks were not backing down. Lehigh battled with Navy, tying the score five different times before the Midshipmen went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead. The Mountain Hawks responded with a 3-0 run to cut the deficit down to 21-16. 

Lehig tried to fight back but the Midshipmen would not give up. A kill from Navy's Maggie Bodman gave the Midshipmen the 25-19 win, securing their fifth league win of the season. 

First-year Natalie Luscomb led Lehigh with seven kills. Junior Lylah Washington and sophomores Emily Stewart and Megan Schulte tallied six kills each. Stewart finished with a team-high .429 attack percentage as well as three blocks. 

Lehigh will return to Bethlehem for two matches next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 7, the Mountain Hawks will host Loyola Maryland in Grace Hall at 7 p.m. Lehigh will return to Grace Hall on Saturday, Oct. 8 to host Colgate at 4 p.m.
