Mountain Hawks Edged By Saint Joseph's, 4-3 Wednesday Afternoon

4/27/2022 6:54:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Playing its final non-league game of the regular season, the Lehigh softball team dropped a 4-3 decision to Saint Joseph's on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Leadership Park. Kaelin Cash broke a 3-3 tie with a seventh inning RBI double to give the visitors the victory.

Senior Karsen O'Rourke went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the Mountain Hawks, who fall to 22-15-1 on the season.

Lehigh took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as the Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with one out. O'Rourke singled home senior Jaelynn Chesson to bring home the first run of the game.

Sophomore Katelyn Young started in the circle for the Mountain Hawks and worked out of jams in the second and fourth innings to keep Lehigh in front. In the second, junior Josie Charles caught a line drive and doubled off a runner near the third base bag. Young then faced a bases loaded, no out situation in the fourth, but escaped trouble with a strikeout and two pop outs.

Saint Joseph's (19-20) went in front in the fifth on a three-run home run by Madison Fife, but Lehigh answered with two in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 3-3.

The fifth-inning rally once again began with a walk to Chesson, which was followed by a walk to senior Addie Kittel. Two batters later, O'Rourke lined a single down the right field line, scoring Chesson to bring Lehigh within 3-2. Dudley then plated sophomore Brooke Cannon with the tying run on a sacrifice fly to center.

Sarah Cancila singled to lead off the seventh for Saint Joseph's and then scored the go-ahead run when Cash lined a double off the base of the center field fence.

Kittel singled with one out in the seventh, but the Mountain Hawks stranded the tying run at first base.

Young allowed three hits and two walks over four scoreless innings with four strikeouts. First-year Maria Urban threw the final three frames, allowing three earned runs on six hits with one strikeout.
Emily Siler earned the victory for Saint Joseph's with two innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Lehigh finished with eight hits, with Cannon, O'Rourke and senior Melissa Fedorka each recording two.

The Mountain Hawks will play their final three home games of the season this weekend when Colgate visits Leadership Park for a key Patriot League doubleheader. The series will feature a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday with action both days starting at noon. Lehigh will honor its senior class prior to Sunday's series finale, which will also be broadcast on ESPN+.
